They sat on the chaise-lounge and warmed themselves up with a mug of mulled wine. The fire pit in front of them kept their feet and legs warm. It was a good thing, as Daveyâs new shoes were so thin he had been certain he was going to lose his toes to frostbite.
They were seated in The High Line, where it had been turned into a small Winter Wonderland, with Christmas trees lined up across the old rail tracks and lit by colorful fairy lights, fake snow banks for children and adults to play in, a mini skating rink, and beyond that, a bar and dozens of chairs with small fire pits to keep everyone warm.
Avery and Davey had been standing around for twenty minutes before they were able to grab a seat together in relative privacy, but it had been worth it, since they were now snuggled up in a large chair that just about fit both of them.
Avery was wearing his scarf again, but Davey assumed he hadnât thought he would get it back today, as the rest of his wardrobe was a completely different color scheme. He wore black jeans and a brown jumper with a green beanie. Averyâs glasses were slightly frosted when he turned to look at Davey, and Daveyâs insides ached. Avery was a sight to behold. And yet he was choosing to spend his time with the weirdo that was Davey.
âLike the shoes,â Avery said, looking at his crossed legs, and Davey looked at his own as well.
âThanks,â he said. âThey are really thin, though, so Iâm fuh-reezing!â
Avery sat up. âAre you sure you want to stay out here then? I donât mind going someplace else,â he said.
âItâs okay,â Davey shook his head. âIâm not made of paper. Iâll survive. Besides, the fire is keeping me warm,â he said.
Avery sat back down on the chair and grinned. âThank God! âCause I really like it here.â
Davey agreed.
Certainly, the Christmas enthusiasm that was overflowing around him was not the bestâhe could do without the screaming children and the sickening kissing couples wearing Santa hats and the college students going crazy on the ringâbut he was by a fire with Avery, and that made everything better.
âWhat did you end up doing today?â Avery started, and Davey told him all about his day. Avery did the same, with much less interest. Instead he turned the subject to Davey yet again and his unusual hobby.
âI like making things with my own hands. You can control the quality of the product, and it gives me great satisfaction when I finish.â He sighed at the double entendre he had just made, hoping that Avery hadnât noticed, although the smirk on the manâs face said otherwise. âItâs also very therapeutic. When my mom passed away, itâs the one thing that kept me sane. It kept my mind off the horror, the loneliness, the anger, and grief and focused it on making something new,â he said, the memory of that time in his life bringing sorrowful tingles around his eyes and nose.
